Joints: The Movements

1. Flexion – Angle between the joint decreases.

2. Extension – Angle between the joint increases.

3. Hyperextension – Movement past the norm.

4. Plantar Flexion – Pointing toes out.

5. Dorsiflexion – Pointing toes straight up.

6. Abduction – Away from the midline.

7. Adduction – Towards the midline.

8. Rotation – Around an axis.

9. Circumduction – Moving a structure in a circular motion.

10. Supinaton – Move hand so that the palm is up.

11. Pronation – Move hand so that the palm is down.

12. Eversion – Sole of the foot moves outward.

13. Inversion – Sole of the foot moves inward.

14. Protraction – Moving a part forward.

15. Retraction – Moving a part backward.

16. Elevation – Raising a part.

17. Depression – Lowering a part.
